WFS Science Workshops
Please note that a Workshop Day is usually three workshops all the same, either delivered to three classes of the same year group or adapted for different age groups. The workshops are structured and are timed fairly precisely. Please discuss the day's timetable with me as each workshop will normally require an unbroken length of time; timings are approximate depending on circumstances
To the Circus!
A variety of investigations based around the theme of a circus. Concepts covered include: force in the context of pushing, pulling and twisting; balancing forces; and the effect of gravity.
Foundation-Y2 Space: hall or classroom Time: about 75 minutes
Construct and Roll
This activity begins with a discussion of the energy powering a clockwork torch, pupils continue on to make elastic band toy and investigate the factors affecting their working. Children use junior hacksaws.
Y3-Y7 Space: hall or classroom Time: about 75-90 minutes
Solar
This workshop gives children an opportunity to investigate solar cells, and how the amount of electricity the cells produce from light changes when different factors are varied, including the use of different components in circuits and different numbers of cells. A solar powered zoetrope is used to simulate discussion about measuring the effect of a cell in different conditions.
Y3-Y8 Space: classroom and outdoors (weather permitting). Lamps used in bad weather.
Time: about 60 –75 minutes.
Electricity
A series of investigations that cover aspects of electrical circuits and conductivity.
Foundation- Year 2 Space: hall Time: about 75 minutes
Toys
Children investigate a variety of toys to investigate how they work. Concepts covered include pushing pulling and twisting.
Foundation – Year 2 Space : hall Time: 60 minutes

- Fantastic activities, explanation and information- just at the children's level. Very well presented and organised." - Meadow Green Primary School
- The workshop was designed well and was directed for this age range. Beginning with a physical activity to warm bodies up was a great ice breaker."
The content was great. Despite being a key stage 1 workshop, this level was appropriate for my Year 3 children and gave them challenges." - Helen, Leominster School.
- Excellent - pitched at correct level and kept the children interested. Good vocabulary used." - Beaconside school
The children observed the candles burning- lots of good discussion. Recapped on a previous lesson about colour mixing. Lots of good vocabulary."
Excellent ldeas, very clear and direct. Good health and safety issues covered. Excellent links from science to other curriculum areas." - Malbrook School
Thanks you so much for leading exciting and inspiring science sessions. The children and staff thoroughly enjoyed their experiences and learned so much.We also appreciated your effective organisation and management of the whole event and hope that there will be future opportunities for other pupils." Sandra Martin (Headteacher - Science week Sutton Coldfield 2016 The children thoroughly enjoyed the workshops. They were engaged throughout and gained alot of new vocabulary and knowledge.
