Science and DT Workshops

To The Circus

Children begin the session with a 'brain gym' warm up to circus music! The after a discussion about their experiences of the circus, they embark on 5 different investigative activities that develop concepts to include forces: pushing and pulling, spinning,balancing and the effect of gravity.

Other possible cross curriculum links are:

  • Literacy: Speaking and listening skills
  • Numeracy: size, shape, pattern
  • PHSE: working together to solve problems
  • Creativity: Movement and dance and imagery
  • Age appropriate: Foundation- Year 2
  • Space : Hall or classroom
  • Duration : 75 minutes

Solar Power

This workshop commences with a powerpoint introduction to alternative energy sources. This is then followed by a series of investigations allowing the children to investigate solar cells by making a solar powered fan or zoetrope.

  • Numeracy: positive and negative applications
  • PHSE: Working together to solve problems
  • Art: Animation, drama and movement
  • History: Film making, theatre
  • Age Appropriate Year 3 - Year 6

  • Duration: 60-75 minutes

Wax Works

This workshop begins with a sensory introduction about different types of wax; the science of a candle and focusing on how a candle burns.

During this workshop, children will have an opportunity to dip and make a multi -coloured candle and explore colour mixing and translucency. All children go home with a candle.

Other possible curriculum links:

  • Literacy: Speaking and listening, writing
  • Numeracy: Probability of colour combinations
  • PHSE: Taking turns and working together
  • Art: Colour mixing, light box work, batik and resist work
  • Age Appropriate Foundation - Year 6
  • Space: Classroom
  • Duration: 60-75 minutes

Construct and Roll

This Science and DT workshop begins with a discussion and investigation about energy. Artefacts are explored including a clockwork mechanism. Pupils then have the opportunity to construct and make a toy that is powered by an elastic band. After construction an opportunity is given to explore fair testing in a series of experiments.

Other possible curriculum links:

  • Literacy: Speaking and Listening, Instructional texts
  • Numeracy: Accuracy and measurement
  • PHSE: Working together to help and support each other
  • History: Toys in the past
  • Art: Designing and making different toys
  • Age Appropriate Year 3 - Year 6 ( Junior hacksaws used)
  • Space: Hall or classroom
  • Duration: 75-90 minutes
